La Liga leaders Barcelona are willing to go all out to acquire the services of Ilkay Gundogan ahead of next season.
According to Football Insider, Catalan giants Barcelona are keen on signing Ilkay Gundogan. Xavi will look to bolster his squad with a few midfield signings. And he will surely love to have the 32-year-old Manchester City midfielder at his disposal.
Gundogan has been performing at a high level on a consistent basis for the past few years. The former Borussia Dortmund midfielder is a crucial part of Pep Guardiola’s team. But, with his contract expiring in the summer of 2023 and with Barcelona interested, things do not look good for the Manchester-based club.
The 32-year-old joined Manchester City back in the summer of 2016 from Borussia Dortmund. Ever since his arrival at the club, he has gone from strength to strength. The German midfielder has featured in over 250 games for City and has been involved in 89 goals.
It has been another great season for the former Dortmund star. He has played 34 matches in the ongoing season for Guardiola’s team. Gundogan has been one of the best Manchester City players of late, and the Premier League champions are expected to try everything possible to extend his contract. However, with just three months left for the summer window, anything is possible.
Barcelona have been doing wonders in La Liga but have not managed to go far in Europe. The Catalan giants failed to make it out of the UEFA Champions League group stage. And, they recently suffered defeat in the Europa League knockout round at the hands of Manchester United.
Xavi will be eager to turn things around in the next season. Their goal will be to do better in the Champions League and for that, they will rely on a few reinforcements. But, with the ongoing financial crisis at the club, they have been forced to look at potential free agents.
With Gundogan’s contract set to expire in a few months, the Catalan giants have their eyes set on him. His arrival will allow Barcelona to rotate the midfield. It will also add more experience to Xavi’s midfield. The 32-year-old is a perfect fit for the club. But, it remains to be seen if he signs an extension with Manchester City or decides to move on as a free agent.
