Barcelona contact Takefusa Kubo

La Liga heavyweights Barcelona have reportedly contacted the agent of Takefusa Kubo, whose release clause is worth €60 million.

According to a report by Spanish outlet AS, Barcelona might look to sign Takefusa Kubo in the summer transfer window. And the Catalan giants have contacted the Japanese international’s agent. The young winger has a release clause worth €60 million in his contract with Real Sociedad.

Takefusa Kubo seemed destined for greatness when he joined Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy over a decade ago. But FIFA rules forced him to leave Barcelona and return to Japan to finish his youth career. The 21-year-old subsequently returned to Spain by joining Real Madrid in July 2019.

But good fortune deserted Kubo again, as did not have enough opportunities to make his mark at Real Madrid. And he joined Real Sociedad in a permanent move last summer after a few loan spells. The Japanese international is enjoying a solid season, amassing four goals and seven assists in 26 appearances. And the player’s performances have captured the attention of Barcelona.

Barcelona might enter the market for a wide-attacking reinforcement in the summer transfer window. That is because Ferran Torres and Raphinha face uncertain futures at Spotify Camp Nou. Several clubs are interested in signing the duo, with Ansu Fati also attracting high-profile clubs.

So Barcelona will need to scour the market for a wide attacker. And Kubo has emerged as a viable target for the Blaugrana. The 21-year-old is well-settled in La Liga and growing in stature at Real Sociedad. His performance levels are also improving with each passing week, making him an attractive option.

But Kubo’s release clause will complicate matters for the financially-stricken Barcelona. The Catalan giants are in no position to trigger it and pay €60 million to secure his services. But they have contacted Kubo’s agent to ask about his situation and determine if a deal will be feasible.

But Real Sociedad will unlikely agree to a fee lower than €60 million, considering they share his rights with Real Madrid. It will be interesting to see if Kubo becomes a top target for Barcelona and how they fund a move for him.
