AS Roma are keen on bringing Trevoh Chalobah to their club in the summer, as the defender may lose his place at Chelsea next season.
According to Calcio Mercato, AS Roma are one of the clubs keen on signing Trevoh Chalobah. The 23-year-old ace could lose his place at Chelsea next season if the club brings in additional defenders, with Jose Mourinho eager to bring the centre-back to his side.
Trevoh Chalobah represents some of the excellent work done by those in charge of Chelsea’s Cobham academy. Alongside Reece James, Conor Gallagher, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount, the defender is one of the academy products playing regularly in the Chelsea first team this season.
While he is not considered a bonafide regular under Graham Potter, the manager has used him in versatile defensive roles this season. In Chalobah’s last two starts for the club, the towering centre-back played as a right-back to good effect, covering for the injured James.
Since James has returned, he might find game time hard to come by. Moreover, Chelsea remains linked with several top-level centre-back names for a summer transfer, which could jeopardise his long-term career at the club. Despite signing a long-term deal until 2028 with the Blues, Chalobah could depart when the summer window opens.
Chelsea were reportedly considering a part-exchange deal with Inter Milan for Denzel Dumfries; Chalobah also has standalone interest from other Italian sides. Ideally, for a young English centre-back like the 23-year-old ace, they would prefer to continue playing in England, but Italy also has its merits.
In recent years, players and fellow Chelsea academy star Fikayo Tomori has excelled in Italy with Milan. He could become the benchmark for Chalobah to make a name for himself in the league and flourish without uncertainties. Jose Mourinho is keen on the defender and wants to sign him in the summer.
AC Milan are also interested, but playing under Mourinho could take precedence in Chalobah’s case. Chelsea could demand a significant sum for the defender, but Roma could look to negotiate with the Premier League side.
There should be a need for a new centre-back at the club, notably if Chris Smalling departs at the end of the campaign. He will have a place in their defence, reminiscent of how Chelsea operates at the back. Much will depend on how much he would cost for Roma, although they might negotiate with the Blues for a reasonable deal.
