Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing 24-year-old Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero in the summer.
According to a report by Fichajes, Real Madrid are keen on signing Tottenham Hotspur center-back Cristian Romero. The 24-year-old defender has been performing at an exceptional level of late. And, Florentino Perez wants to land him at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Argentine centre-back has been putting in great performances for both club and country. He was exceptional at the FIFA World Cup 2022. The Tottenham defender played an integral part in helping his nation lift the World Cup back in December.
The 24-year-old centre-back joined Spurs back in the summer of 2021 from Atalanta. Initially, it was a one-year loan move that saw him join the north London club. There was a buy option in his loan move which was triggered to keep him at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on a permanent basis.
Ever since his arrival, Romero has been a key part of the team. He has featured in 50 matches for the English club. In the ongoing season, he has turned out 20 times for Antonio Conte’s team and has put in solid performances consistently. Meanwhile, his market value has soared to €60 million.
Romero’s contract at Tottenham ends in the summer of 2027. And, Conte’s team are not interested in selling him, although things could change given the interest from Real Madrid. However, one thing is certain the Argentine international will not leave on the cheap.
Real Madrid are keen on adding another centre-back into the mix. Carlo Ancelotti wants to add another world-class defender and make rotation easier. With the future of Nacho Fernandez uncertain their plans to buy a centre-back in the summer do make sense.
Cristian Romero is one of their transfer targets for the centre-back position. While their priority is still to push for Josko Gvardiol, who wants to join them, Los Blancos are aware that it won’t be an easy operation given the interest from all top clubs across Europe. As a result, they have identified Romero as an alternative who could help their cause. At a market value of €60 million, he will also be cheaper than Gvardiol.
Ancelloti is an admirer of the player and would love to have him at his disposal. The Real Madrid boss believes Romero is an ideal partner for Eder Militao. And, the duo can solve their defensive headaches for years to come. However, it will be interesting to see if the Merengues can convince Tottenham to sell their star defender.
