Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing 22-year-old Bayern Munich full-back Alphonso Davies in the summer.

According to Ben Jacobs in his exclusive column for Caught Offside, Newcastle United are interested in bringing Bayern Munich full-back Alphonso Davies to St. James’ Park. The Magpies’ sporting director Dan Ashworth is a big admirer of the Canadian international and is plotting a move to land him in the summer.

Ben Jacobs said, “I also think Newcastle would prefer, as priority, a left-back. Eddie Howe values a young, speedy and dynamic kind of player in that position. The modern full-back can almost be confused with a winger at times. That’s why a profile like Bayern’s Alphonso Davies has peaked sporting director Dan Ashworth’s interest.”

Alphonso Davies has been putting in some exceptional performances for Bayern Munich over the past few years. And, Newcastle United’s sporting director is set to go all out for the 22-year-old’s signature.

Davies joined the German giants back in the winter of 2019 from Major League Soccer club Vancouver Whitecaps. Ever since his arrival at Bayern Munich, the full-back has gone from strength to strength. He has made over 140 matches for the Bundesliga side and has been directly involved in 30 goals. The youngster has also won the UEFA Champions League (UCL) with Bayern.

In the ongoing season, he has made 26 appearances and has eight goal contributions to his name. It has been another outstanding season for the 22-year-old. His contract at the club ends in the summer of 2025. But Davies’s departure is unlikely, although given the financial backing of Newcastle United, anything is possible.

Eddie Howe will enter the summer transfer window to further strengthen his squad as they look to push for the Premier League next season. They are currently fourth in the Premier League with 41 points in 22 matches. And, if they manage to finish in a UCL spot, they will have a much better position while approaching the big names across Europe.

According to Jacobs, Howe would love to have a young pacey, and dynamic player at left-back. And Davies is someone who fits perfectly into his plans. If they manage to secure his signature, he will directly slot in at left-back and will surely bolster their squad. But, Newcastle are expected to face a lot of competition from elsewhere amid interest from Real Madrid.

Signing the 22-year-old from Bayern Munich looks far-fetched for Newcastle United. Alphonso Davies is happy at Bayern Munich and is unlikely to leave. However, if the Magpies secure Champions League football, things could change. But, one thing is sure: they will have to break the bank to land him at St. James’ Park.
