Tottenham dealt blow in their pursuit of Milan Skriniar

Tottenham Hotspur have no chance of signing Milan Skriniar in the summer, with PSG set to swoop for the Inter Milan star on a free transfer.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Milan Skriniar. The Slovakian defender will leave Inter Milan as a free agent, with Paris Saint-Germain inching closer to securing the centre-back.

Milan Skriniar has made his name at Inter Milan, helping them rise again in Serie A circles. The Nerazzurri had seen a massive, decade-long downfall. But players like the Slovak have helped them restore some pride. The centre-back was instrumental in their Serie A title win under Antonio Conte.

The same manager wanted a reunion with the defender at Tottenham, as he internally pushed the club to make a move for him in January. At the same time, Inter Milan were not open to selling him last month and slapped a huge asking price.

Tottenham were keen on Skriniar, but did not want to overspend on a player available on a free transfer in the summer. They wanted to enquire with his agents to finalise a Bosman move, but Paris Saint-Germain had already swooped in.

The report claims PSG’s offer was far greater than what Tottenham had in mind. Hence, there’s no chance for Spurs to sign the 27-year-old Serie A star. While the Parisians are yet to announce his capture officially, Inter Milan hinted at a possible departure after stripping him of the captaincy.

The idea of watching a potential free agent join another side will be a big blow for Conte and his plans for next season if he stays at the club. The Italian manager wanted to revamp his options at the back and has a few targets on his shortlist, including Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

Spurs have suffered this season due to their leaky defence. Moreover, they may not opt to make Clement Lenglet’s loan move permanent. There are also question marks over the futures of Eric Dier and Ben Davies, with the duo underperforming for Tottenham this season.

Hence, Conte wanted someone he could trust to marshall the backline and thought of no one better than Skriniar. The 27-year-old Serie A star moving to PSG will come as a blow for Tottenham. The north Londoners will move on to other targets, hoping to finish in the top four to attract the best talents.
