Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly push for the signature of 26-year-old English forward Ivan Toney in the summer.
According to a report by Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Brentford striker Ivan Toney ahead of next season. Antonio Conte is looking to add more firepower to his squad in the summer. The Spurs boss is a big admirer of the 26-year-old and wants him as his new marksman.
Toney is in talks with the Bees over a potential new deal that will extend his stay at the club. His current contract ends in the summer of 2026. But, his performances of late have forced the board to think about increasing his wages. Because if they miss out, there are a lot of clubs who can give him a lucrative deal.
The English striker is believed to be earning around £30,000-a-week after getting a hike in 2021 on the back of their promotion to the Premier League. Brentford are set to offer him £50,000-a-week, which will make him the highest-paid player at the club. But, it will be interesting to see whether he signs a new deal or is tempted by the interest from the big clubs like Chelsea and Tottenham.
Ivan Toney joined Brentford back in the summer of 2020 from Peterborough United. During his time with the west London club, he has scored 61 goals and provided 20 assists in 110 appearances. He has been one of their best players for the past few years.
The 26-year-old has been on fire in the ongoing season. The English striker has found the back of the net on 13 occasions in 19 Premier League games and also has three assists. As far as all competitions go, the Brentford attacker has 14 goals and 4 assists in 21 matches.
Tottenham Hotspur want to sign the Brentford marksman in the summer. They are willing to push for his signature. And if he does not sign an extension with the Bees, Spurs will surely bid for his services. Conte wants to increase competition amongst his forwards for a place in the XI.
Son Heung-min and Richarlison have been struggling for form of late. Even Harry Kane’s future at the club is not certain. And as a result, pushing for Toney does make sense for Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the summer. The north Londoners can potentially offer him much higher wages than £30,000-a-week.
But, the Brentford striker was charged by the FA with over 250 alleged breaches of betting rules in December. If these allegations are true he might be suspended from the Premier League which can backfire on Spurs. As a result, they will have to push for him with a lot of caution.
