According to a report by 90min, Chelsea are interested in 23-year-old goalkeeper Diogo Costa who is also being monitored by Manchester United. The Blues are set to address their goalkeeping position in the summer. And, Portugal’s Diogo Costa is a name on their list of potential targets.
Chelsea are currently in transition and are looking to assemble a squad of young players with immense potential. Portugal’s Costa has been putting in some sensational performances over the past year and a half. His performances earned him a spot in Portugal’s World Cup XI. He featured in every match of their World Cup campaign. He is an excellent shot-stopper and has sharp reflexes.
Diogo Costa is a product of the FC Porto youth academy. He has been at the club since 2011 and has gone up the ranks at some speed. He was a part of the senior team for the first time in 2019. And since then has gone on to be a regular starter. During his time with the first team, he has featured in 93 matches and has kept a clean sheet in 40 of them.
In the ongoing season, he has played 25 matches for the Portuguese club and has managed 13 clean sheets. Three of his clean sheets have been in the Champions League. His performances have caught a few eyeballs and a lot of clubs are scouting him.
The Blues have Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy in their ranks. Arrizabalaga arrived at the club as a world-record signing. He started off his Chelsea career in fine fashion. But in a few years’ time, he was replaced by Mendy who went on to help Chelsea win the Champions League.
Of late Kepa has been a starter with Mendy struggling because of injuries. But, the concern for Chelsea has been the inconsistency of their two shot-stoppers. Graham Potter wants to further strengthen his goalkeeping position. The contracts of both the keepers end in the summer of 2025 and as a result, they are looking at potential targets to replace them.
Chelsea scouts have been monitoring Diogo Costa for the last few weeks and they are likely to push for his signatures in the summer. Manchester United are also interested in the goalkeeper and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top in this battle for the 23-year-old Portuguese keeper.
