Atletico Madrid have agreed to sign Matt Doherty on loan from Tottenham as the north Londoners close in on Pedro Porro.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Atletico Madrid are set to sign Matt Doherty on loan from Tottenham today. The Irish right-back is out of favour under Antonio Conte. And ahead of the imminent arrival of Pedro Porro, he will depart the club.
Tottenham are making headway in the transfer window on deadline day as they continue to find ways to strengthen the squad. Antonio Conte wanted to bring in defensive reinforcements for the next phase of the season. But the north London club could not find any ways to do so.
Spurs have chased Pedro Porro for most of the month, with Sporting CP’s demand for the release clause posing a big problem. Eventually, they agreed before the deal collapsed yesterday after the Portuguese side changed the terms of the agreement.
After resuming talks, Tottenham have agreed to the deal with Sporting for Porro. The Spaniard’s arrival will mean one of the current right-backs will depart north London. Emerson Royal was expected to depart for a considerable period. But Matt Doherty appears to be on the chopping block.

Atletico Madrid have agreed on a deal with Tottenham to take Doherty on a six-month loan deal. There will be no buy option included, with the Irish international expected to return to north London after the current season.
Atletico Madrid have already scheduled medicals for the right-back; after that, the contracts will be signed. It is a good deal for the Spanish giants to get the 31-year-old defender, who could add some defensive cover. The Rojiblancos have already allowed Felipe to join Nottingham forest. So a move for Doherty makes sense regarding numbers at the back.
Whether he gets a regular slot in games remains the question. But overall, it is a good move for all parties concerned. Meanwhile, there could be another potential departure at Tottenham with another right-back, Djed Spence, on the verge of joining Rennes on loan.
Conte is looking to trim the players in a difficult position and hopes the arrival of Porro will balance the team. As for Doherty, he might even look at a new option in the summer, as his Tottenham career is more or less over.
