Fulham are reportedly interested in signing 24-year-old Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge, a target for Newcastle United.
According to Mike McGrath, Fulham are inching closer to signing Sander Berge. And they have had talks with Championship club Sheffield United over the weekend for the Norway international midfielder, a target for Newcastle United.
Meanwhile, Craig Hope from Daily Mail has claimed that Fulham will face competition from Newcastle United for the 24-year-old midfielder this month. It will be interesting to see where the Norwegian ends up eventually.
Sander Berge has played in the Premier League before, and he has emerged as an attractive target for the London club. Fulham have done quite well in the Premier League this season and will fancy their chances of securing European football for the next season.
The Cottagers are currently seventh in the table, and Marco Silva is determined to improve his squad and finish the season strongly. Sander Berge has the technical and physical attributes to thrive in the Premier League. And the opportunity to return to the top flight could be too hard to turn down for the Norway international. He has been linked with Chelsea and Liverpool as well.
Both Fulham and Newcastle would represent an excellent move for the 24-year-old. But it remains to be seen whether Sheffield United are prepared to sanction his departure before the deadline.
The Blades are currently second in the Championship table. And they are pushing for promotion to the Premier League. Losing their best midfielder midway through the season could weaken the squad severely and damage their promotion hopes.
However, a lucrative offer could tempt the Championship outfit into considering a sale. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops over the next few hours.
There is no doubt that Newcastle are a club with far more resources compared to Fulham, and they are well-placed to secure Champions League football as well. However, the Magpies are reportedly looking to loan the player until the end of the season as opposed to Fulham who are ready to sign in permanently this month.
That could give the Cottagers an edge in the transfer race. It will not make sense for the Blades to loan a key player out for the rest of the season. So it looks like Fulham might beat Newcastle United to the 24-year-old midfielder.
