Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing 20-year-old Montpellier striker Elye Wahi, a target for Arsenal.
According to a report from Foot Mercato, Elye Wahi has caught the attention of a number of clubs with his performance. And Tottenham happen to be one of the few clubs following his displays closely. Apparently, Spurs are not the only Premier League club keen on signing the young attacker, and they will face competition from London rivals Arsenal as well.
It Is no secret that Tottenham need to add more depth to their attack, and the 20-year-old could prove to be a quality long-term acquisition. Wahi has been in impressive form for Montpellier this season, scoring seven goals in the league.
Antonio Conte needs to bring in a player who can share the goalscoring burden with Harry Kane. And the 20-year-old French striker seems like an ideal fit in theory. The youngster could be an understudy to the England international for now and then replace him eventually in the long run. Recent reports have linked Kane with Manchester United.
Furthermore, the 20-year-old is far from reaching his peak, and he is likely to improve further. The transfer could look like a bargain in the long run if Wahi manages to adapt to English football and fulfill his potential with Tottenham.
Meanwhile, Arsenal could use more depth in the attack as well. The Gunners have been overly reliant on Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, and Bukayo Saka this season, and Mikel Arteta needs to add more options to his attack. And the north Londoners have set their sights on Wahi.
The 20-year-old French striker can play anywhere across the front three and his versatility will be an added bonus. The report claims that a January move away from Montpellier seems unlikely unless there is a substantial offer later on in the window. It will be interesting to see if Arsenal or Tottenham are prepared to pay way over the odds to sign the player this month.
Alternatively, they could look to sign him at the end of the season as well. Wahi will be tempted to join a big club like Arsenal or Tottenham in the summer, and it will be a major step up in his career. The player has a contract with Montpellier until 2025. And it remains to be seen how much the Ligue 1 outfit demand for his services.
