Premier League outfit Newcastle United are keen on signing Everton attacker Anthony Gordon, a target for Chelsea and Tottenham, this month.
According to a report from Chronicle Live, Newcastle United director Dan Ashworth was present at the St. Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday night after intense negotiations for Anthony Gordon. The 21-year-old is also a target for Chelsea, and a deal might be possible for £40 million.
The player is thought to be on the radar of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur as well. And Newcastle are waiting to gauge the true extent of their interest before advancing talks with Everton. Meanwhile, a deal in the region of £40 million is possible.
Chelsea have already signed a number of attacking players like Mykhaylo Mudryk, Joao Felix and Noni Madueke this month. A move for Gordon seems highly unlikely. The Blues will not be able to present him with regular game time at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, Tottenham are on the verge of signing Arnaut Danjuma and might be done with their January attacking business.
The 21-year-old was linked with a move away from Goodison Park at the start of the season as well, and he was valued at £60 million, a price Chelsea were willing to pay. However, his valuation has dropped since then. And Newcastle are hoping to take advantage of Everton’s problems on and off the pitch and sign the talented young winger this month.
Everton are currently without a manager after sacking Frank Lampard following a series of disappointing performances. They are currently 19th in the table. And it will be interesting to see if they are prepared to sanction the departure of a key player like Gordon this month.
The 21-year-old helped Everton beat relegation last season, and his departure will weaken the squad further. Apparently, the winger could be signed for a fee of between £35 million and £40 million this month.
Newcastle are currently fighting for a place in the top four and will know that the right signings in January will boost their chances of securing Champions League qualification. The Magpies could certainly use more quality in the attacking department. And Gordon has emerged as a top target.
The 21-year-old is well-settled in the Premier League and could make an immediate impact. Despite the fact that he has not been able to hit top form this season, he remains a prodigious talent with a big future ahead of him. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe will certainly fancy his chances of getting the best out of the youngster in the coming season.
Gordon has been under a lot of pressure to fire Everton to safety this season. And perhaps a move away from Goodison Park will allow him to enjoy his football once again, without being put under too much pressure. But it will be interesting to see if Chelsea or Tottenham get in Newcastle’s way in the coming days.
