Arsenal could turn their attention to Amadou Onana and are ready to battle Chelsea for the midfielder this month.
According to the Evening Standard, Arsenal could battle Chelsea for the midfielder Amadou Onana. Mikel Arteta is in the hunt for a new midfielder before the January transfer window shuts and could look to take advantage of the ongoing crisis over at Everton.
In the summer, Amadou Onana was a big capture by Everton, as they paid around £33 million to secure the Belgian midfielder. The 21-year-old made a big impact in the early days. Recently, he has been languishing in the bottom three in the Premier League with his team’s disappointing results since then.
In recent days, links of a move away from the club have emerged strongly, and there is a chance he might depart before the current window shuts. Everton are in a difficult position on the table and could become favourites to get relegated from the Premier League.
Some big clubs mean to take advantage of their current crisis and target a few of their top players. Tottenham have already snatched Arnaut Danjuma from under their noses by hijacking a move in the last minute. The forward had completed a medical with the Toffees, but Spurs swooped in late to sign him.
Anthony Gordon is also on the verge of joining Newcastle United, with Chelsea in the race for the young attacker. Now, Onana’s name has emerged as a possible departure, with Chelsea interested in the midfielder. The Blues have searched the market extensively so far but so far have not captured their preferred targets.
Moises Caicedo could remain at Brighton, while their hopes of signing Enzo Fernandez are slim. Todd Boehly might have switched the attention towards Onana. He is reportedly prepared to pay the right price to ensure Everton profit from their investment.
Chelsea’s pursuit of the 21-year-old Premier League ace could become complicated due to Arsenal, who are also in the hunt for a new midfielder. Mikel Arteta is keen on someone to come in and shore up a thin-looking midfield setup. The Spaniard’s main concern is to bring competition for Thomas Partey.
If Arsenal lose the Ghanaian midfielder to an injury, they might fall short in the title race. They will chase Declan Rice in the summer as a priority option. Hence, Arteta might have been open to a loan move in this window. But looking at Onana’s potential availability, the Gunners could swoop in for the 21-year-old.
It will come across as a difficult operation due to the potentially high price tag and Chelsea’s presence in the chase. Moreover, Everton might decide to keep the player as they enter yet another relegation dogfight.
