Newcastle United will reportedly face stiff competition from Aston Villa in the race to sign €40 million-rated versatile Everton attacker Anthony Gordon during the January transfer window.

Aston Villa and Newcastle United are ready to go up against each other in their winter pursuit of 21-year-old, talented Everton winger Anthony Gordon. That’s according to a recent report from 90min, which claims the Toffees are open to selling the England Under-21 international this month and will listen to bids for the youngster.

Gordon was a sought-after commodity among some of England’s elite clubs in the summer. Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur were also interested in capturing Gordon, but Everton’s determination ensured that the Toffees’ academy product stayed put at Goodison Park.

The Merseysiders had very lucrative offers on the table for Gordon, with Chelsea willing to pay as much as £45 million for the 21-year-old, who played a key role and made six goal contributions in the Premier League as they avoided relegation last season. The Toffees’ stance back then was clear: their crown jewel is not for sale.

However, Everton are in disarray, and for a second consecutive season, Frank Lampard’s side looks set to face an uphill battle to secure Premier League survival.

With supporters up in arms and resentment in the air at Goodison Park, it is a situation that has inevitably raised questions over the future of key underperforming players, with Gordon also the subject of heavy criticism after producing under-confident displays this season and being among those targeted by angry fans last week.

Everton have almost completed a straight loan deal for Villarreal attacker Arnaut Danjuma and are only one step away from confirming his arrival at Goodison Park.

Danjuma’s imminent arrival may pave the way for a potential exit for the 21-year-old, who has stalled on putting pen to paper on a new long-term deal with the club lately and appears to have his head turned by outside interest.

And it appears he will have his wish to jump the sinking ship, with 90min reporting that the Toffees are now willing to consider approaches for Gordon in order to get vital funds to facilitate their winter transfer plans. Gordon is rated at €40 million by Transfermarkt and the Toffees will be expecting a fee in that region to part ways with their prized asset.

Despite the poor 2022–23 season, Gordon has plenty of suitors lining up to secure his talents. Newcastle United, for one, have revived their interest in the Everton attacker after chasing him last summer. The Magpies are set to test Everton’s resolve with a fresh offer for the winger this winter as the Tynesiders look to bolster their attack after offloading Chris Wood to Nottingham Forest.

While Chelsea and Spurs have cooled their interest in Gordon, Newcastle won’t have a clear run at landing the highly-rated forward, with Aston Villa among a host of Premier League sides chasing after his signature.

Villa boss Unai Emery wants another forward player this month and has been linked with a number of options, including Villarreal duo Nicolas Jackson and Samuel Chukwueze. Gordon fits the profile thanks to his relentless energy, work rate, and quality on his left peg. It remains to be seen who out of Newcastle and Villa will come forward with a firm offer first.
