Aston Villa are looking to sign French striker Moussa Dembele from Lyon before the January transfer window closes.

According to a report from Daily Mail, Aston Villa have made an approach to sign Lyon striker Moussa Dembele for a bargain price this month. The former Celtic attacker will be a free agent in the summer, and Lyon could look to cash in on him this month instead of losing him for nothing at the end of the season.

Apparently, the player is available for a fee of around £3 million this month after a series of disappointing displays since the start of the season. The 26-year-old has scored just twice this season. And it will be interesting to see if Aston Villa can secure his services before the January transfer window closes.

The West Midlands club have recently sold Danny Ings to West Ham United in a deal worth around £15 million. So they will need to bring in a replacement, despite securing the services of Colombian attacker Jhon Duran.

Ollie Watkins is the only reliable striker at the Midlands club right now, and Unai Emery cannot hope to embark on the remainder of the season with just one attacker at his disposal. So Aston Villa need to find a reliable goal scorer in order to finish the season strongly.

While Dembele has not been at his best this season, he remains a quality player. And a move to the Premier League could give him the fresh start he needs right now. The 26-year-old French international was recently offered to Everton. Emery could bring out the best in the Frenchman and it remains to be seen how the situation develops.

The opportunity to move to the Premier League will be an attractive option for the player, and he might be tempted to join the West Midlands club. Dembele was linked with a move to the Premier League during his time at Celtic. But a move never materialised. It remains to be seen whether all parties can come to an agreement in the coming days now.

The 26-year-old French international joined Lyon in 2018, and he managed to score 44 goals in his first two seasons with them. However, Dembele was sent out on loan to Atletico Madrid in 2020, and he struggled to hold down a regular starting birth at the Spanish club. Dembele returned to Lyon last season and scored 22 goals across all competitions.

There is no reason why he cannot regain his goal-scoring touch once again at Aston Villa. The player is only 26 and he has his peak years ahead of him. Emery could help him improve further and fulfil his tremendous potential. The reported £3 million asking price could prove to be a massive bargain for Aston Villa in the long run.
