Chelsea have reportedly stepped up their efforts to sign PSV winger Noni Madueke in the January transfer window, just days after wrapping up a blockbuster Mykhaylo Mudryk deal.
Chelsea have not been shy about splashing the cash in the market to improve their squad this month as they have been very active in the January transfer window. And one can expect more of the same before the window slams shut.
That’s according to a report from Simon Phillips, Chelsea have ramped up their pursuit of PSV wonderkid Noni Madueke after seeing an opening bid worth €30 million for the young winger.
Journalist Simon Phillips said to GMS, “Chelsea are definitely very keen on this player. He’s one of many top young talents that Chelsea are trying to bring in.
“We’ve seen already, since the new owners came in, that they have been splashing the cash on young players.
“He’s another one that has come to the forefront and they’ve recently accelerated that interest and had some initial contact with his agent to see if a deal is doable.”
The former Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur academy player, Madueke, has made quite the impression since making the move to the Netherlands in the summer of 2018.
The 20-year-old has been a fixture in the PSV first team since rising through the PSV youth ranks and making his breakthrough in 2020/21. He has made 80 appearances for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team across all tournaments, racking up a decent tally of 20 goals and 14 assists along the way.
Madueke enjoyed a stellar campaign last year with nine goals and six assists in 35 outings, but an ankle injury ruled the versatile winger out of the opening three months of 2022/23. He returned in October and has scored two goals in eight appearances so far. A regular for England at all youth levels, Madueke plays on the right wing for the Dutch club but can also operate as a central striker.
While he has a contract with PSV until the summer of 2025, and the Dutch giants are looking to keep him around the block after already losing Cody Gakpo to Liverpool earlier in the transfer window. They will likely face an uphill struggle with interest mounting in their prized asset from cash-rich clubs in his homeland.
Chelsea, for one, are looking to buy their way out of their slump, and a sixth January recruit may help do just that amid a serious injury crisis in the attacking department. The Blues have “accelerated” talks for PSV’s English winger Madueke, and they may have a good chance of securing his signature this month.
Graham Potter’s side recently signed Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix on loan until the end of the season, followed by another blockbuster signing of Ukrainian sensation Mykhaylo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk, hijacking Arsenal’s pursuit of the player in the process.
A summer swoop for RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku is also believed to be on the cards, but Todd Boehly and co. aren’t showing any signs of slowing down when it comes to wanting to make even more attacking reinforcements, and by the looks of things, Madueke will be joining the cohort of recruits soon as the Blues seek to overhaul their squad in a short period of time and make an absolute mockery of FFP in the process.
