Atletico Madrid, Barcelona eyeing Guido Rodriguez swoop

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are reportedly interested in signing 28-year-old Argentine international Guido Rodriguez from La Liga rival Real Betis.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Guido Rodriguez is a hot property in the market. And La Liga heavyweights Barcelona and Atletico Madrid want to sign the 28-year-old midfielder from Real Betis. Los Verdiblancos will demand €25 million to part ways with the player.

Guido Rodriguez has come leaps and bounds since joining Real Betis from CF America in January 2020. The Argentine international has established himself as one of the best midfielders in La Liga. At the same time, he has been a regular for Argentina on the international stage in the last few years.

The 28-year-old was a part of the squad that went all the way at the 2022 FIFA World Cup last year. As for his stint with Real Betis, Rodriguez has made 117 appearances thus far, chipping in with six goals and three assists. And the player’s progress has captured the attention of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Barcelona will look to sign a defensive midfielder this year to replace Sergio Busquets. The veteran midfielder has seen his performance levels regress considerably. So Barcelona will need to bring in a long-term successor for the former Spanish international. And Guido Rodriguez has emerged as a viable target.

As for Atletico Madrid, the Colchoneros have seen their players blow hot and cold over the years. And several midfielders face an uncertain future at Civitas Metropolitano, including Geoffrey Kondogbia. The 29-year-old has emerged as a target for Aston Villa. Meanwhile, Axel Witsel is well into his thirties.

So Guido Rodriguez is an option worth considering. And Atletico Madrid and Barcelona can sign the Argentine international for just €25 million this year. But it is unclear if either club can afford to pay even €25 million to snare the player away from La Liga rival Real Betis.

Both clubs are in financial duress and need to offload players to afford new signings. So it will be interesting to see if Barcelona or Atletico Madrid can sign the Real Betis midfielder. But the Argentine international also has several other suitors, including Liverpool.
