Scott McTominay open to Newcastle United move

Scott McTominay is emerging as a target for Newcastle United this month, with the Manchester United midfielder reportedly open to a switch.

According to Daily Telegraph, Newcastle United may receive some encouragement in pursuing Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay. The Scottish international has cut a frustrated figure with the lack of chances and game time under Erik ten Hag. Meanwhile, Eddie Howe thinks he will fit the Magpies’ system well.

Newcastle United are actively looking at different players. Eddie Howe remains keen to strengthen the squad before the end of the month. Last January, the Magpies were one of the biggest spenders in the window. But they recruited smartly rather than splashing the cash.

Having continued the trend in the summer, Newcastle are back in the hunt for effective signings to build on their pursuit of a top-four place. They are currently above Manchester United on goal difference. Howe’s men remain one of the favourites to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Howe needs a winger, a right-back, and a central midfielder before the window shuts. There are a few notable targets, especially for their midfield requirements. Players like Ruben Neves are on their radar. But whether Wolves will allow a sale mid-season remains a big doubt.

Newcastle are also keen on signing Conor Gallagher on loan from Chelsea. But the Blues are unlikely to sell a player to strengthen the Magpies at this stage. The targets are constantly shifting in Howe’s mind, and Scott McTominay also features on their shortlist.

McTominay is concerned about his lack of playing time at Old Trafford. Erik ten Hag has somewhat sidelined the Manchester United midfielder gradually this season. The Scotsman may not have a long-term future. Hence he is considering his options and remains open to Newcastle’s interest.

Howe may feel that the Manchester United midfielder fits with his system well and could utilise him in at least two different roles. Newcastle United are also sweating over the fitness of Bruno Guimaraes, who limped off with an ankle problem against Fulham.

McTominay could prove a good option for the Magpies, as he could also cover for Guimaraes if the Brazilian is sidelined for a long time. Howe will also see him in a progressive role similar to Joe Willock. The Manchester United midfielder will become a quality cover for at least two roles, which is what Newcastle need now.

The big question would come from Manchester United’s willingness to sanction a move. The matter may prove easier in the summer. But selling a player to a team battling for a top-four place may seem risky from the Red Devils’ point of view.

The next days will prove crucial, as Newcastle United could lodge a formal offer if they feel McTominay is keen on a move. For now, he may remain open. But much will depend on ten Hag’s plans with the midfielder for the remainder of the season.
