Newcastle United have enquired about a potential transfer for 24-year-old Fiorentina forward Nicolas Gonzalez.
As reported by Tuttomercatoweb, Newcastle United have expressed their interest in Fiorentina winger Nicolas Gonzalez. The 24-year-old Argentine attacker has been one of the most highly-regarded prospects in Serie A.
Nicolas Gonzalez joined Fiorentina from VfB Stuttgart in June 2021 and made a long-lasting impact with 12 goal contributions in Serie A last season. The 24-year-old was selected for Argentina’s World Cup squad. But he had to withdraw his name due to an unfortunate injury.
Newcastle United’s recent form has been pretty sublime, as they have maintained a steady distance from both Arsenal and Manchester City in the table. Eddie Howe wants to push more and is in the hunt for a wide man to introduce more competition to the squad.
To that end, recent reports have linked Newcastle United with Fiorentina attacker Nicolas Gonzalez. The financial stability of many Italian clubs has been pretty shaky, and La Viola could feel the heat to offload the Argentine attacker if they receive a suitable offer.
But Fiorentina general manager Joe Barone has made it clear that they will not be forced to sell the player. He said, “Gonzalez and Amrabat are both Fiorentina players. I am pleased that they have received interest from other clubs, but nowadays it is not easy to take players from us.”
Leicester City have reportedly agreed on personal terms with the player and remain interested in him. Brendan Rodgers is hoping to bring in some reinforcements, and a fee of £30 million has been mooted as his value.
Gonzalez loves to operate from the left flank but can also be deployed on the opposite side, while he is equally fluent as a centre forward. Fiorentina will be holding out for the maximum as the Argentine attacker has a contract till 2026.
The player currently earns to the tune of £83,000 per week. And both Newcastle United and Leicester are ready to offer him a contract more than his current pay packet. Gonzalez’s arrival would allow Howe to experiment with more with his tactics. Should a tempting offer arrive, Fiorentina might not be able to reject the bid, as they will need funds to execute their plans.
