Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves this month.
According to a report from Daily Mirror, Ruben Neves is a target for Newcastle United and Liverpool. But the Magpies are unlikely to make a move for the 25-year-old Portuguese international until the summer transfer window.
Apparently, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of the Portuguese international. And it remains to be seen whether the Reds can strike a deal for him this month. The 25-year-old has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League since joining Wolves from FC Porto. And he can be a superb long-term acquisition for Liverpool.
The Reds are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements, and Neves would be a major upgrade on club captain Jordan Henderson. The England international is clearly past his peak and has struggled to hit top form for over a year now.
Klopp will need to replace his struggling players if the Reds are to challenge for trophies once again. Neves is well-settled in the Premier League, and he could make an immediate impact at Anfield for Liverpool.
Liverpool have had a disappointing campaign so far and will need to improve their squad in order to secure UEFA Champions League qualification. Bringing in someone like Neves could transform them in the middle of the park and help them secure a top-four finish.
Missing out on the Champions League could be catastrophic to the club’s finances. And it remains to be seen whether the Liverpool hierarchy are prepared to break the bank for the 25-year-old Wolves star. Apparently the midfielder was valued at £70 million at the start of the season.
But his asking price has dropped because of his contract situation. The player has 18 months left on his current contract, and Liverpool will be hoping to sign him for a reasonable fee. The Reds must look to make their move this month to avoid a bidding war with Newcastle United in the summer.
The Magpies are the richest club in the world, and the Reds simply cannot compete with them in terms of finances. And with Newcastle keen on signing a midfielder, the Merseyside outfit might have a tough time beating them. But the opportunity to move to Liverpool is likely to be a tempting proposition for Neves, and he could be attracted to the idea of playing under Klopp.
The 25-year-old has the potential to develop into a top-class player. And playing alongside the likes of Thiago Alcantara at Liverpool could help him improve further and fulfil his potential. Apart from being an excellent passer in the middle of the park, Neves will help out defensively and he can chip in with long-range goals as well.
