Sporting CP defender Pedro Porro is on the transfer wishlist of Premier League clubs Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

A report from Mundo Deportivo claims that Chelsea are now ahead of London rivals Tottenham in the race to sign Pedro Porro. And it remains to be seen whether they can pull off the signing before the January transfer window closes.

The 23-year-old Spanish defender has caught the attention of a number of European clubs with his performances this season. And he has also been highly impressive in the UEFA Champions League. Porro has a release clause of €45 million in his contract, and Sporting CP will only sanction his departure this month if his suitors are willing to pay up.

Tottenham are thought to be extremely keen on signing the 23-year-old. And there is no doubt that the Spaniard would be an upgrade on Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty. Antonio Conte wants a quality attacking full-back who will help out at both ends of the pitch. Porro seems like an ideal fit for the Italian’s style of play. But Chelsea are now keen to secure his services.

Reece James has had persistent injury problems this season, and it seems that Graham Potter is now looking to bring in an alternative. Chelsea certainly have more financial resources compared to Tottenham. And it remains to be seen whether they can beat their rivals to his signature this month.

The opportunity to join Tottenham or Chelsea is likely to be an attractive proposition for the player, and it will be a major step up in his career. The Spanish defender will hope to showcase his qualities at a big club, and Chelsea can certainly provide him with that platform. It remains to be seen whether the Blues are prepared to pay the €45 million asking price for the defender.

The Spaniard is a reliable defender, and his attacking output has been outstanding this season. Porro has two goals and ten assists across all competitions and could be a very useful player for Graham Potter during the second half of the season. The Chelsea manager has had to use midfielders as makeshift full-backs in the absence of James and could do with a natural replacement now.

Chelsea have been active in the January transfer window, and they recently completed the signing of Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid on a loan deal. The Blues have also brought in players like David Fofana, Andrey Santos, and Benoit Badiashile to improve their squad depth. Porro could be the icing on the cake for the Blues if they manage to get the deal across the line.

The 23-year-old can also operate as a winger because of his attacking qualities and his versatility could make him a key asset for the Blues in the coming seasons. For now, Chelsea are ahead of Tottenham in the race to sign the Spanish defender.
