West Ham United are interested in FC Lorient striker Terem Moffi

According to 90min, Premier League side West Ham United are in discussions to bring in FC Lorient star Terem Moffi in the ongoing 2023 January transfer window.

The Nigerian striker came through the ranks at Buckswood Football Academy before having his break at Lithuanian side Kauno Zalgiris. He spent several years in Lithuania and Belgium before moving to Lorient in 2020.

The 23-year-old has looked at home in the French top flight and continues to impress for Les Merius. He has been in exceptional form this season, scoring 12 goals in 18 appearances for the Ligue 1 side.

A prolific goalscorer, he is exactly what the doctor ordered at West Ham. The London-based side went big last summer, landing Gianluca Scamacca and Lucas Paqueta among others. However, their attack has fallen flat, finding the back of the net just 15 times in 18 Premier League games.

The Hammers have the joint fourth-worst attack in the league this season and find themselves embroiled in the relegation battle. Unless something changes fast, Moyes and co could fight for their lives to retain their top-flight status in the coming months.

The January transfer window offers West Ham a chance to strengthen their ranks and to bring in another striker appears to be on the agenda. One of the players on their radar is Moffi, and the youngster has shown enough potential to suggest he could be the answer to their woes.

While the 23-year-old is an excellent finisher, his game is far from well-rounded. Moffi struggles to compete aerially and is far from adept, when it comes to holding up the ball. This could see him struggle at least immediately should he move to the English top flight.

Moffi appears to be the flavour of the month among sides involved in the relegation battle. Southampton and Everton are also on the hunt for the Nigerian, and it remains to be seen where he will eventually end up, should he move at all.

Lorient, for their part, does not appear to be averse to selling their star man but are seeking £25m for his services. While the fee is rather steep for a player who is largely unproven at the top level, it should be worth it should he help the Hammers stave off the drop.
