Genk striker Paul Onuachu has emerged as a new target for Manchester United as they continue searching for a Cristiano Ronaldo replacement.
According to a report by Jeunes Footeux, Manchester United are exploring a deal for Genk forward Paul Onuachu this month. The 28-year-old striker is being seen as an easily obtainable prospect.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure has left Manchester United in the midst of uncertainty, as there is a void of proper goalscorers in the current squad. Marcus Rashford has had an excellent season. But the Englishman has mostly been preferred on the left flank. Meanwhile, Anthony Martial’s disruptive injury problems have not gone well with the club’s plans.
Most importantly, Manchester United are short of numbers in the offensive unit. So Erik ten Hag’s priority has been to bolster his weakened attacking ranks, and he has been impressed by the work rate of Onuachu.
The 28-year-old has had the knack of scoring goals on regular occasions, and he could be seen as a proper squad player. Manchester United are expected to undergo further rebuild in the summer when a more pragmatic approach could be taken for a lethal striker. And Harry Kane is one of the top targets for the Red Devils.
A deal for Wout Weghorst has been tipped to be close. But Besiktas have refused to sanction his departure without proper arrangements. Therefore, complications have started emerging in that deal.
Onuacho will cost in the region of €20-25 million. But United will only entertain loan deals due to their summer outlay. And it could help the 28-year-old’s other suitors, like Everton, to execute their plans.
The Merseyside outfit have struggled for goals. And the Nigerian international has triggered an interest. The player’s imposing figure is expected to provide an abundance of presence for the other attackers, as he is perfectly built for the Premier League.
Manchester United have a wide range of wingers. But the absence of a target man has been a backlog for the Red Devils. They have already breached the top four, and ten Hag does not want to lose the current momentum. Onuachu has netted 18 goals in 15 matches in all competitions this term and could be the perfect foil to offer adequate cover to the likes of Marcus Rashford.
