Newcastle United are keen on signing 21-year-old Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes from Flamengo in January.

According to Rudy Galetti, Newcastle United are interested in signing Joao Gomes from Flamengo in January. The Magpies could have a busy January window, with a midfielder part of their ideas in the market. The 21-year-old Brazilian midfielder could become available if a reasonable offer arrives.

Joao Gomes continues to attract interest from England and Europe as he looks ahead to realising his dream of playing in the UEFA Champions League. The 21-year-old Brazilian midfielder is a hot prospect coming out of South America, following some impressive and consistent performances for Flamengo.

He has made over 110 appearances for Flamengo at different levels and finally found his breakthrough with the senior team in the last 18 months. Gomes is yet to feature for the national side. But that could happen faster if he is to play at the highest level with a European club.

A host of top clubs continue to chase Gomes’s signature, including Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Liverpool. With no more continental commitments left with Flamengo, the 21-year-old Brazilian midfielder could become available for a transfer.

Gomes recently expressed his desire to play in the UEFA Champions League amid heavy links with Liverpool. While the interest from Merseyside remains, Newcastle United are reportedly keen on signing the 21-year-old Brazilian midfielder in January.

Newcastle United have performed beyond everyone’s expectations this season as they sit in the third spot on the Premier League table. They are one of the outsiders to challenge for the title but are current favourites to qualify for the Champions League next season.

They also have enough Brazilian presence with Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes, which may help them secure a player like Gomes. The latter currently occupies the defensive midfield position as Eddie Howe seeks a new player to share the burden.

Signing Gomes would help Newcastle strengthen their squad and add depth to a position lacking quality. Guimaraes is the only reliable midfielder at the club, with Howe likely to look for alternatives to Jonjo Shelvey.

Gomes will cost a considerable sum, and many sides are willing to pay up. Newcastle United may find themselves in a solid position to challenge those suitors for the 21-year-old Brazilian midfielder, who may get attracted at the prospect of playing in the Champions League next season.
