Manchester United are interested in signing 33-year-old Bayern Munich striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in January.

According to German journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich are keen on tying Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting down to a new contract. But Manchester United are hoping to sign the 33-year-old from the Bundesliga champions this month.

The Cameroonian international has a contract with Bayern Munich until the summer of 2023, and he will be a free agent at the end of the season. So Choupo-Moting could be available for a knockdown price this month.

Bayern could consider selling the 33-year-old this month if he refuses to sign an extension with them. The Bundesliga champions are currently holding talks with the player’s agent regarding an extension.

As per reports, talks have been positive between the two parties, but the player is yet to decide on his future. Apparently, he wants regular first-team action next season, and it remains to be seen whether the Bavarian giants can provide him with such assurances. As things stand, that prospect seems unlikely.

Meanwhile, it is no surprise that Manchester United want to sign the player. They terminated the contract of Cristiano Ronaldo prior to the World Cup, and Erik ten Hag needs to bring in an attacker this month.

Marcus Rashford is the only reliable goalscorer at the club right now, and the Red Devils must look to add more depth and quality in the final third. Widespread reports a few weeks ago suggested that Manchester United also submitted an enquiry for Choupo-Moting.

Manchester United will be hoping to finish in the top four and secure UEFA Champions League qualification. They need more quality to beat the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Newcastle United, and Liverpool to a top-four finish.

Choupo-Moting has the ability and the experience to make an immediate impact at Old Trafford. The 33-year-old has been in fine form this season, and he has 11 goals and three assists to his name in 16 appearances across all competitions.

Signing him for a reasonable price could prove to be a smart decision for the Red Devils. The 33-year-old has the experience of playing for a big club and knows the challenges of playing for a team fighting for major honours. It remains to be seen whether he decides to snub a new deal at Bayern to move to Manchester United.
