Aston Villa are contemplating an audacious swoop for Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodrigo de Paul in the January transfer window.

As per Fichajes, Aston Villa are considering a move for Argentine midfielder Rodrigo de Paul. The World Cup winner has fallen in the pecking order at the Wanda Metropolitano and Villa want to take advantage of his situation.

De Paul played a pivotal part as Argentina lifted the World Cup after 36 years. The midfielder was ever-present in the midfield for his country and produced some great displays on his way to the podium.

The 28-year-old only moved to Madrid from Udinese in 2021 and it seems he already has lost his place in the side. He was picked to start just once in European games this season as Rojiblancos made a mess of their Champions League campaign.

In La Liga too, he has not been the preferred choice and the club might decide to cash in next month. Following their horrific European run, they are in dire need of funds. They have already placed Joao Felix in the market and could add more players to the transfer list in a bid to boost their finances.

The 28-year-old’s performance has been impressive when he donned the Argentine jersey and he does have the tenacity to match the intensity in the Premier League.

He could be rusty at times but Villa could see some gain as they need some bite in the midfield area. Douglas Luiz could push for a transfer again next month and they would have to be ready with their contingency plan in case he leaves.

Atletico have pretty good leverage given the player’s long contract and Villa have already got some big names at their disposal in the form of Philippe Coutinho and Leon Bailey.

The Spanish outfit will demand a hefty fee to part ways with the player and it remains to be seen whether Villa can afford his arrival. Unai Emery’s side have done decently in the top flight but they do need adequate bodies to get through games as the fixtures are piling up pretty quickly.
