Newcastle United are reportedly keen on signing 25-year-old Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez.
According to a report from The Athletic, 25-year-old Mexican international Edson Alvarez is a target for Newcastle United as they look to beef up their midfield options.
Newcastle are reportedly looking at a number of midfielders in the upcoming windows, and Alvarez happens to be one of the names on the shortlist. The tough-tackling defensive midfielder was linked with a move to the Premier League during the summer transfer window. And Chelsea were reportedly keen on securing his services.
However, the Dutch outfit sold a number of important players during the summer transfer window, and they refused to let go of Alvarez as well. There is a chance their stance could change in the upcoming windows, and it will be interesting to see if Newcastle can negotiate a reasonable price for the Mexican.
The Magpies could definitely use midfield reinforcements, and Alvarez would be a superb acquisition. But recent reports have suggested that the 25-year-old midfielder is keen on joining Chelsea.
Eddie Howe needs to add more quality and depth in the defensive midfield berth at the Newcastle United. Alvarez would be an upgrade on Sean Longstaff and Jonjo Shelvey. And it will be interesting to see if the Magpies can bring him in next year.
Newcastle already have a quality playmaker in Bruno Guimaraes, who is closing in on signing a new contract. And partnering the Brazilian international with a solid defensive midfielder could give Newcastle an outstanding base to build on.
The Magpies are currently second in the Premier League table, and they will be hoping to secure UEFA Champions League qualification by the end of the season. They are one of the richest clubs in the world. And if they manage to secure Champions League football for the next season, there is no reason why they cannot attract the top players to St James’ Park.
Alvarez has shown that he has the ability to play for the top clubs. And a move to Newcastle could be ideal for all parties. Although the Magpies might not be ready to challenge for the major trophies yet, they have an ambitious project and the resources to compete with the elite clubs in the near future. Alvarez could be a key part of their project going forward.
