Manchester United and Liverpool will go head to head again in pursuit of Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

According to journalist Pedro Almeida, Liverpool and Manchester United are ready to pay €120 million for Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez. The Benfica midfielder has been severely linked with a transfer outside of the Portuguese club.

The recently-concluded 2022 FIFA World Cup proved to be a perfect audition for the Argentine midfielder, who was one of the catalysts in La Albiceleste lifting the coveted golden trophy after a gap of 36 years.

The youngster only arrived in Portugal from River Plate this past summer. And clubs have already started to circle for his signature. Benfica won’t allow a January exit for their star player, and a summer exit could be viable if an interested party pays his release clause.

Fernandez has a mammoth €120 million release clause in his deal. And it is believed both the Premier League giants are willing to go all the way for his service. Manchester United brought in Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in the summer. But Erik ten Hag wants to have some continuity as he is constantly upgrading his squad.

Manchester United did take the option to extend Fred’s contract by a year. But he is no more an untouchable, and if a suitable offer arrives, the Brazilian might be on his way towards an exit.

Liverpool recently beat Manchester United in the race for Cody Gakpo, and Jurgen Klopp might have to work his trick once again. The Reds roped in Arthur from Juventus at the very last moment. But the Brazilian midfielder has been on the sidelines.

The Merseysiders need to sort out their midfield frailties as more than one midfielder could be on their way out from Anfield. Liverpool are aware of their current condition, and next summer could witness the arrival of multiple midfielders.

It is suggested Benfica could soften their stance on the proposed price. And a settlement could be done. The midfielder has already shown his credibility on the biggest stage, and he could be ready to take the next big step in his football career.
