Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Philadelphia Union defender Kai Wagner, a target for Leeds United.

According to a report via Tribal Football, Newcastle United have joined the chase to sign Kai Wagner. The 25-year-old German left-back is on the radar of Leeds United as well. It will be interesting to see if the Magpies can beat their Premier League rivals to his signature.

Kai Wagner has been one of the best defenders in the MLS in recent seasons, and he could prove to be a useful addition to Eddie Howe’s defensive unit at Newcastle United.

Newcastle United have improved tremendously over the last few months, and they are currently third in the Premier League table. The Magpies will be hoping to secure UEFA Champions League qualification. And a couple of quality additions in January will certainly boost their chances of finishing in the top four.

Wagner has proven himself in the MLS, and he will be tempted to move to the Premier League now. The German left-back has also emerged as a target for Leeds United.

The 25-year-old is a reliable defender and is equally effective going forward. Wagner could add a new dimension to the Newcastle attack with his output in the final third. The player has nine assists across all competitions this season, and he could form a lethal partnership with Allan Saint-Maximin down the left flank.

The German defender is likely to be tempted if Newcastle come calling with a concrete offer. The Magpies are one of the richest clubs in the world and have an ambitious project. They have the finances to tempt Philadelphia Union into selling the defender as well.

Although Leeds United are a big club as well, Newcastle have the potential to play European football next season, which could give them an edge in the transfer chase. Apparently, Leeds want him to replace Junior Firpo at the club.

The 25-year-old is entering his peak years and will be looking to test himself at a higher level. Moving to the Premier League could not come at a better time for Wagner, and it remains to be seen how the situation develops. He has a contract with the MLS club until June 2023. So Philadelphia Union will look to sell him in January. It remains to be seen where he ends up.
