Chelsea best placed to sign Moises Caicedo

Sir Jim Ratcliffe could replace Erik ten Hag with Graham Potter at Manchester United.

Chelsea are reportedly the best-positioned club to sign 21-year-old Brighton enforcer Moises Caicedo ahead of fellow top-four hopefuls Liverpool.

According to transfer insider Dean Jones via Give Me Sport, Chelsea are leading the race to land in-demand Brighton & Hove Albion defensive midfielder Moises Caicedo, a target for Liverpool, at the end of the season.

Journalist Dean Jones said to GMS, “I don’t think Brighton will sell him in January, but whenever the time comes, I expect Chelsea to be in the best position to sign him because of the relationship with Graham Potter.”

The 21-year-old has only established himself as a mainstay at Amex in the ongoing 2022/23 campaign. Since arriving from Independiente del Valle for £4.5 million in January last year, he has scored two goals and provided two assists in 26 appearances across all competitions for the south coast outfit.

An all-action box-to-box midfielder and a ferocious tackler, Caicedo initially broke into Brighton’s first-team picture in the second half of the last term after returning from a short-term loan stint at Belgian Pro League outfit Beerschot. Replacing the outgoing Yves Bissouma at the base of Brighton’s engine room, the Ecuadorian has started all 14 of his team’s Premier League games in the current season.

Caicedo already possesses extremely efficient defensive qualities, ranking in the top 16% for tackles made and the top 18% for blocks when compared to his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues. He’s also a strong presser and a skilled distributor of the ball.

In a nutshell, he’s an entire midfield package who is a jack of all trades and a cheat code thanks to his tremendous versatility; the sky is truly the limit for the midfielder.

The Ecuador international also had a brilliant World Cup despite his nation being knocked out at the group phase itself. He played in every minute of Ecuador’s campaign, and his consistent showings for El Tri on the world’s biggest stage will have only solidified the interest Europe’s premier clubs already had in signing him. It’s no wonder that Liverpool and Chelsea are chasing after his signature.

Chelsea, for one, have the Brighton midfielder very high on their list of transfer targets. With Jorginho and N’Golo Kante out of contract next summer, the Pensioners are said to be keen to delve deep into the transfer market for top young midfield prospects.

The West London club have already signed two young midfielders, Carney Chukwuemeka and Cesare Casadei, while they are also closing in on a move for Vasco da Gama sensation Andrey Santos, with an eye on the future. Caicedo fits the profile and could be the ideal long-term replacement for Kante.

Similarly, Liverpool may well look to bring in some fresh and younger players to bolster their midfield, which currently has three players over the age of 30. Furthermore, the deals for Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain expire at the end of the season.

If a bidding battle arises, the Blues should still have an advantage in the race. That is because the player’s relationship with former boss Graham Potter could play a key role in determining Caicedo’s next destination. After all, Potter was the man who brought the midfielder into the Premier League in the first place. Either ways, Brighton’s bank balance will be the biggest winner here.
