Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Argentine midfielder in Enzo Fernandez, a target for Liverpool.

According to a report from ESPN, Newcastle United are keeping tabs on 21-year-old Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who is a target for Liverpool as well.

The talented young central midfielder has been outstanding for club and country this season. He was a key player for Argentina as the South American giants lifted the World Cup trophy last week. The player was chosen as the Golden Boy for being the best young player in the World Cup.

There is no doubt that the 21-year-old has the potential to develop into a world-class footballer. And he could prove to be a sensational acquisition for Newcastle United if they can sign him. However, manager Eddie Howe has recently played down links with the player, stating that he would cost an astronomical sum of money.

Fernandez has a release clause of €120 million, and it will be interesting to see if his suitors are willing to pay that kind of money for him. Newcastle United could certainly use a quality central midfielder like him to partner Bruno Guimaraes. And the Argentine international would be a massive upgrade on players like Jonjo Shelvey.

On the other hand, Liverpool are looking to rebuild their squad starting with the midfield. They are keen on signing the 21-year-old midfielder and the Reds are reportedly prepared to pay a club-record fee to sign him.

Liverpool have had a dismal campaign so far, and the midfield unit has been a major concern for Jurgen Klopp. A number of key players have regressed this season and the Reds have been plagued with injuries as well. Liverpool are probably looking to bring in more than just one midfielder in the upcoming windows.

Enzo Fernandez has proven himself at the highest level, and he will be hoping to take the next step in his career now. A move to Newcastle or Liverpool could be the ideal step in his development, and it will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Newcastle United are the richest club in the world, and they certainly have the resources to pull off the transfer if they are truly interested in signing him. But recent reports have claimed that he wants to join Liverpool, thus creating an intrigue around his future.
