Chelsea, Manchester United vying for Emiliano Martinez

Manchester United and Chelsea could tap into the possibility of signing Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

According to a report by 90min, Manchester United could shift their focus to Aston Villa shot-stopper Emiliano Martinez in to replace David de Gea between the sticks. Argentina’s World Cup hero is also a target for Chelsea.

Emiliano Martinez added a World Cup to his trophy cabinet as his heroics led Argentina to their third World Cup crown after a gap of 36 years. His performance earned him the Golden Glove in the tournament, and he will now explore his future.

New Aston Villa boss Unai Emery does not seem to be a huge admirer of the player from his Arsenal days. And both the player and the manager need to reach a consensus regarding their future endeavour.

Chelsea are monitoring his current movement, and Graham Potter could be interested in a deal for the 30-year-old. Neither Edouard Mendy nor Kepa Arrizabalaga has been able to convince the current manager, and Martinez could be a shrewd option.

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly is about to bankroll another huge overhaul. So the Blues could make an audacious attempt to bring the 30-year-old to Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window.

Martinez committed to a long-term deal last January. And if he is to leave, Villa will be leveraging a hefty transfer fee after his recent World Cup heroics. His display on the biggest stage triggered some interest in the transfer market. And Manchester United are said to be one of the suitors.

David de Gea’s huge salary has been a stumbling block in the negotiations. And efforts are being made to reduce his wages to facilitate a new deal. The 32-year-old has been a loyal servant to Manchester United, but he could leave the club for free if both parties fail to reach an agreement.

Emiliano Martinez could play alongside fellow World Cup winner Lisandro Martinez at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, the 30-year-old’s agent recently confessed he would like to see his client playing in the Champions League, saying, “Today, there are very few teams that can afford a goalkeeper like him. Clearly, we’re aiming high, for the Champions League.”

Manchester United are unlikely to let de Gea leave for free and should definitely protect his value by exercising the one-year option in the contract. The Red Devils have also been linked with a move for FC Porto ace Diogo Costa. And it remains to be seen who they finally bring in to compete with their current number one. It will also be interesting to see if Chelsea can beat Manchester United to Martinez.
