Manchester United are interested in signing the Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
According to a report from Teamtalk, the Premier League side have already initiated talks regarding a potential move for the 34-year-old Bundesliga goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
Sommer has been a key player for club and country over the years and he could prove to be a useful addition to Erik ten Hag’s squad. The goalkeeper is at the peak of his powers and he could make an immediate impact at Old Trafford next season.
The 34-year-old will be a free agent at the end of the season and Manchester United are hoping to snap him up on a free transfer.
It will be interesting to see if the Red Devils can secure an agreement with the player in the coming weeks. Sommer will be eligible to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs starting in January.
Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils decide to part ways with David De Gea at the end of the season. Sommer is likely to demand first-team assurances before moving to Manchester United and his arrival could push the Spaniard down the pecking order at Old Trafford.
De Gea has been an outstanding servant for the club since joining them and he is too good to sit on the bench at Old Trafford every week. He should look to move on in search of regular game time if Sommer comes in.
There will be no shortage of suitors if a keeper like De Gea is on the market. Furthermore, he will be a free agent in the summer of 2023 and clubs would be able to sign him on a free transfer.
The Spaniard has been linked with a move away from Manchester United ever since Ten Hag has come in. Apparently, the Dutch manager wants a keeper with better distribution skills than De Gea.
Sommer is an accomplished passer and it remains to be seen whether the Old Trafford outfit can get his transfer over the line in the coming weeks.
