Newcastle United could make an attempt to secure a move for Chelsea attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech in January.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Newcastle United might be interested in welcoming Hakim Ziyech when the transfer window opens next month. The 29-year-old player’s current contract is scheduled to expire in 2025.

Ziyech hasn’t been involved at all for Chelsea this season and his days could be numbered at Stamford Bridge. It appears to be neither Thomas Tuchel nor Graham Potter prefers the attacker and he could be on the edge of leaving the club in January.

But Ziyech has revived his fortunes with some good form in the World Cup and considering his current form, he could be given a long shot in the starting lineup. Potter is in dire need of some inspirational performances and Ziyech could be the man who could make a difference.

Newcastle’s brilliant run in the Premier League has helped them secure third place as of now but the Magpies are also considering plugging their gap in the winter.

A short-term loan could be beneficial for Ziyech who will play his last match of this World Cup against Croatia in a third-place playoff on Saturday. He is known for his knack for shooting from long range and if he gets the space to cut in on his left foot he could decide games on his own.

De Marzio insisted other possible teams hovering for his signature but Newcastle is also a possibility.

“Ajax and AC Milan were linked to him in the summer. But in the last days of the transfer window we contacted Milan and they let us know on the record that they didn’t want him at all as they were close to the arrival of Charles De Ketelaere. I also don’t think they will make another attempt for Ziyech.

“Ajax… That is another story, they are interested, because his heart is still in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. They would welcome a return. But after this World Cup… I do expect other Premier League teams to try at Chelsea, in terms of a loan. Newcastle, for example, which is aiming for a Champions League spot.

“And then it just depends on what the player wants, a rental period or a permanent deal. And I think Ziyech is going for the latter variant, so the question is which club can offer him the best project.”

Ziyech could go on to establish his authority in West London or he could be offloaded as the Blues are prepared to undergo another squad overhaul next month.
