Liverpool have reportedly reached a pre-agreement to sign Argentine international Enzo Fernandez at the end of the season.

According to a report from Argentine outlet La Capital, Liverpool have secured an agreement in principle with Benfica regarding the transfer of Enzo Fernandez at the end of the season. The Argentine international is also a top midfield target for Manchester United.

The 21-year-old central midfielder has been outstanding for club and country this season, and his performances have caught the attention of Liverpool. It is no surprise that the Reds have secured an agreement in principle to sign the Argentine international given their midfield woes this season.

Liverpool could lose a number of players at the end of the season when their contracts expire. So Jurgen Klopp needs to bring in midfield reinforcements in the summer. Naby Keita, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, and James Milner will be free agents in June. On the other hand, the likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have struggled to hit top form.

It is imperative that Liverpool invest in quality young midfielders over the next few months. And Enzo Fernandez could prove to be a superb long-term acquisition. The 21-year-old has three goals and five assists to his name across all competitions, and he could improve the Liverpool midfield considerably.

Despite being in his early 20s, he is already performing at a high level for Benfica and the Argentine national team. He has the potential to come in and make an immediate impact at Anfield next season. The 21-year-old is also a target for Manchester United.

The player has a contract with Benfica until the summer of 2027. So the Eagles are likely to demand a premium for his services. Liverpool might have to break the transfer record in order to land him. And it will be interesting to see how the situation develops.

The opportunity to move to Liverpool would be a tempting proposition for the talented young midfielder. Working with a manager like Klopp could help him fulfil his world-class potential. Meanwhile, the update comes as a blow for Manchester United, even though recent reports claimed they were the front-runners to sign him.

Liverpool recently signed Darwin Nunez on a big money deal from Benfica, and they will be hoping to build on those connections and secure the services of Fernandez in the upcoming windows. As for Manchester United, they remain in the market for a midfield reinforcement to improve Erik ten Hag’s options. It will be interesting to see who they pursue after losing the Enzo Fernandez race.
