Tottenham are reportedly looking to improve their defensive options in January, with Stefan de Vrij a leading target.
According to a report from Football Insider, Tottenham have emerged as the front-runners to sign 30-year-old Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij from Serie A giants Inter Milan during the January transfer window.
The 30-year-old centre-back will be out of contract at Inter Milan in the summer, and he could be available for a nominal price in January. The Serie A giants have not been able to agree on a contract extension with the player. So they could be forced to cash in on him midway through the campaign.
Stefan de Vrij has established himself as one of the best defenders in Serie A since joining Inter Milan. And he could prove to be a quality addition to the Tottenham back four as well. Spurs have reportedly already initiated discussions to sign him.
It is no surprise that Antonio Conte is looking to bring in a centre-back, especially with the way the likes of Eric Dier, Clement Lenglet and Davinson Sanchez have performed this season. All three defenders have been underwhelming for Tottenham, and Conte needs to bring in a quality partner for Cristian Romero.
The Netherlands crashed out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in the quarter-finals. And de Vrij is expected to return to Italy soon. It will be interesting to see if he is keen on completing a move to Tottenham during the January transfer window.
The 30-year-old has worked with Tottenham manager Antonio Conte during their time together at Inter Milan, and he could be keen on a reunion. Furthermore, the Tottenham boss knows the player well and could get the best out of him at Spurs.
The Serie A giants have had financial problems in recent months, and a number of their key players have been linked with moves away. It will be interesting to see if Inter can recoup some money for de Vrij in the upcoming weeks.
Tottenham are fighting for a place in the top four, and they need to bring in a couple of intelligent additions in January to improve the squad. Stefan de Vrij would certainly be a quality acquisition, and he is experienced enough to make an immediate impact in the Premier League.
