Barcelona set for contract talks with Frenkie de Jong

La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly poised to initiate talks with Frenkie de Jong, a target for Manchester United, over a new contract.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Barcelona will soon open talks with Frenkie de Jong over a new contract. The Catalan giants want to offer the Dutch midfielder, a target for Manchester United, a long-term deal, albeit with a lower salary.

Frenkie de Jong has been on a rollercoaster ride at the club level for much of 2022. The 25-year-old has been one of Barcelona’s most consistent performers since arriving from Ajax in July 2019. But his enormous wages put the Blaugrana in a spot of bother due to the never-ending financial woes. And Barcelona desperately attempted to offload the player in the summer transfer window.

But despite the best efforts from Manchester United, de Jong remained defiant and stayed at Camp Nou. And after starting the season as a backup option, the Dutchman has forced his way into Xavi Hernandez’s plans. The player has made 17 appearances for Barcelona, chipping in with two goals and one assist.

But despite his superb performances, de Jong’s Barcelona future remains up in the air. And recent reports have claimed that the Catalan giants are considering selling the Dutch midfielder next year. Such a situation has captured the attention of Manchester United again.

Manchester United signed two midfielders in the summer transfer window. But Erik ten Hag still wants to reunite with de Jong despite the solid displays by Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. With the Barcelona midfielder offering a different dynamic to the midfield, he is a viable target.

But the 25-year-old remains uninterested in joining Manchester United. And de Jong might soon sign a new contract with Barcelona, who will soon open talks with the player. The Catalan giants want to show the Dutch international that is a pivotal player for them. But they will offer wages that are lower than the ones he currently pockets.

It is unclear if de Jong will be willing to accept a lower salary. But after showing desperation to remain at Spotify Camp Nou in the summer despite Barcelona’s best efforts, the writing might be on the wall.
