Newcastle United are reportedly willing to shell out £10 million to secure the signing of Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle United are ready to pay a sum of £10 million to sign France international Marcus Thuram from Borussia Monchengladbach in January. The Magpies want to wrap up the transfer before the winter transfer window opens in a bid to beat off competition from top clubs.
Thuram has always been considered one of the most highly-rated strikers in the Bundesliga. But a sharp slump in form hindered Borussia Monchengladbach’s campaign last term and raised a few eyebrows. That said, he has since bounced back and is surprising Europe with his excellent start to the season.
The 25-year-old, who is the son of France great Lilian Thuram, has scored 13 goals in 17 appearances across all competitions this season. He has already matched his career-best Bundesliga goals in a season tally with 10 goals to his name.
And his red-hot scoring form has not gone unnoticed, as he has been rewarded with a call-up to France’s 26-man squad list for Qatar 2022 and even made his World Cup debut after coming off the bench in Tuesday night’s 4-1 win over Australia.
The French forward is currently second on the list of leading goalscorers in the Bundesliga, only behind Christopher Nkunku with 12 goals. And, after a disappointing 2021/22 that saw the elites drop him off their striker shortlist, he has become one of the hottest properties in the game out of the blue, with good strikers being a rare commodity, let alone for a bargain price.
His current contract with Borussia Monchengladbach runs out at the end of the season. And a plethora of clubs, including Juventus, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, and Manchester United, are all queueing up for his signature should Thuram opt against penning a new deal with the Bundesliga side.
Cash-rich Newcastle United, though, seem to be pressing ahead with their intention to sign the 25-year-old Frenchman, even before the window opens, with a £10 million bid in the works, wary of the stiff competition for the striker’s services.
Callum Wilson has been in fine form this season, scoring six goals in 11 Premier League appearances. But it seems that the Magpies could be eyeing a move for another striker in the January transfer window as they look to continue their rise and buck the trend by securing a Champions League berth, upsetting the traditional big six apple cart along the way.
Thuram fits the profile of a modern striker who is physically, tactically, and technically dominant. The 6ft 4in goal machine has a rocket of a shot and can also create effectively with his pace, power, and dribbling. He is a hybrid of a speedster, a target man, and a poacher.
Newcastle, interestingly, already possess a similar prototype in Alexander Isak. And pairing the Swede with Thuram up front, as well as the technically gifted Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin on the flanks, is a nightmare attack to cope with. It remains to be seen whether Newcastle can fend off stiff competition from the likes of Bayern Munich and Inter Milan to get their man in January.
