Manchester United step up interest in Memphis Depay

Manchester United could try to bring back Memphis Depay as they will try to invade Barcelona in January.

According to Spanish daily SPORT, Manchester United have started preparations to welcome back their former forward Memphis Depay. The 28-year-old had a brief stay at Old Trafford before moving to Lyon in 2017.

Manchester United will assess their options in January as their will continue its search operation for a potential successor to Cristiano Ronaldo. The 37-year-old’s contract has been terminated by mutual consent on Tuesday, and he will be free to join any other club in near future.

Replacing Ronaldo’s goals would not be an easy task as very few can match his scoring prowess in this European circuit. Depay arrived at Manchester United amidst much fanfare in 2015 from PSV Eindhoven but failed to justify his price tag as he huffed and puffed to get acclimatized to the English conditions.

The Dutch international is currently contracted until the summer of 2023. But Barcelona want a solution in January in an attempt to resolve their current crisis. The Catalan giants are under severe pressure to lower their wage budget. And offloading Depay would be the first step.

Depay is one of the highest-paid players at Barcelona, and he might forego the remaining of his contract if he receives a good sporting project. He was linked with a move to Juventus this past summer, but the Italian club refrained from signing the player.

An injury has somewhat curtailed his development this season, but Manchester United are ready to gamble on it. He can be dangerous if he is on the song, and Manchester United might need his flamboyancy if they are to succeed in this campaign.

Goals are hard to come by as Erik ten Hag is yet to be impressed with his attacking contingent. He did bring Antony from Ajax, but the Brazilian will need time to stamp his authority on the English soil. Depay would be pretty keen to rebrand his career with a successful stint at Manchester United, and the Red Devils would be hoping to get some old wine in a completely new bottle.
