La Liga champions Real Madrid reportedly view 24-year-old Stade Rennais midfielder Lovro Majer as a replacement for Luka Modric.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Lovro Majer is a target for Real Madrid. The reigning La Liga champions are eyeing the 24-year-old Stade Rennais midfielder as a long-term successor to compatriot Luka Modric.

Lovro Majer spent his formative years in and around his hometown Zagreb before establishing a foothold at Dinamo Zagreb. But the Croat has risen in prominence since moving to France by joining Stade Rennais in August 2021. And he has been a pivotal figure for the Ligue 1 outfit in the last 18 months.

The 24-year-old has turned out nearly 100 times for Rennes, chipping in with 19 goals and 25 assists. At the same time, Majer has established a foothold in the Croatian national team and is currently in Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. And the player’s progress has captured the attention of Real Madrid.

Majer has been on Real Madrid’s radar for several months. And the interest in him stems from the advancing years of Luka Modric. The veteran Croatian midfielder has been a pivotal figure for Los Blancos for a decade. But he is in the twilight of his glittering career and will soon hang up his boots.

So Real Madrid cannot afford to be unprepared for Modric’s inevitable retirement in the coming years. Several midfielders have thus emerged on the Merengues’ radar, including Jude Bellingham. But with Liverpool reportedly being in the pole position to land the English international, Real Madrid will need to have alternatives in mind.

Majer is thus a viable target for the reigning La Liga champions, who view him as an ideal successor to Modric. But Real Madrid will not be the only high-profile club pursuing. And the report claims that Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid are also keen on securing the services of the 24-year-old.

A move for Majer might ideally see the light of day if Bellingham does not arrive at the Santiago Bernabeu. Meanwhile, Real Madrid might not even need to sign the 24-year-old if Modric extends his contract. It will be interesting to see if the Croatian midfielder becomes a top target for Los Blancos.
