Fabrizio Romano has rubbished claims that Chelsea will pursue 18-year-old Southampton defensive midfielder Romeo Lavia.
Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has ruled out a potential move for Romeo Lavia to Chelsea. The reputed journalist told Give Me Sport that the Blues have not held any talks to sign the 18-year-old.
Speaking to GMS, the journalist said, “I’m curious to see if they will return for Romeo Lavia or not because, honestly, the reality now is that there are no negotiations. There are no talks between Southampton and Chelsea for Romeo Lavia.”
The Blues have been linked with a number of midfielders in recent months, including Romeo Lavia. And it remains to be seen whether Chelsea can bring in some quality reinforcements in the upcoming windows.
Chelsea desperately need midfield signings, especially with players like N’Golo Kante and Jorginho having the possibility of leaving the club at the end of the season. Both players will be out of contract in June, and Chelsea have not been able to agree on extensions with them yet.
Lavia would have been a solid future investment for the Blues, but it will be interesting to see who they move for next. Chelsea will need to bring in a quality central midfielder and a defensive midfielder. The Blues do not have a specialist defensive midfielder apart from Kante.
As for the other central midfield options, Mateo Kovacic is the only reliable performer at Graham Potter’s disposal. The likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Conor Gallagher can be inconsistent. A club hoping to challenge for the Premier League title and the Champions League will need more depth and quality in the middle of the park.
The Blues certainly have the resources to sign a few quality midfielders, and it remains to be seen how the situation evolves. New owner Todd Boehly was hugely supportive of his manager during the summer transfer window, and he will be expected to back Potter with the funds in January and at the end of the season as well.
