Manchester United might indulge in a teasing transfer battle with Liverpool for Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe.
According to a report by SPORT, Manchester United remain at the forefront ahead of Liverpool as a possible destination for Kylian Mbappe. The 23-year-old is currently with France in Qatar as he is preparing to defend his country’s World Cup crown.
Kylian Mbappe looked destined to leave the Parc des Princes as Real Madrid were tipped to be his potential destination. Los Blancos had even agreed to personal terms with the player, and a transfer was just minutes away.
But PSG decided to interrupt the discussion with a mammoth contract offer which altered everyone’s plans. And the 23-year-old committed for another two seasons after signing the most lucrative contract in the history of football.
The French international is expected to pocket almost to the tune of €630 million if he honours his current deal which also has the option to extend it for a further year. But recent reports have claimed that Mbappe is not happy at pSG as he was promised a superior sporting project at the time of his renewal.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner wants to take a decision as early as possible, and Manchester United could use this opportunity to tap into an unforeseeable future. The Red Devils will certainly part ways with Cristiano Ronaldo, who blamed the club for betraying in an explosive interview with Piers Morgan.
Ronaldo’s ouster would free a lot of wages, and Mbappe could certainly fit in that bracket. It would need a whole lot of finances as PSG won’t sell the player for a sum lower anything than €150 million.
Liverpool are also linked with a move for the player as Jurgen Klopp will freshen up his attacking contingent. The departure of Sadio Mane has had some severe effects on the Liverpool manager’s plans. But the Reds are unlikely to sanction the kind of money needed to sign Mbappe.
Manchester United already invested pretty heavily in the summer, and financing another high-value target would be a difficult task, even though they are the front-runners for his signature ahead of Liverpool. They also have other positions to address, and it could also have severe implications for the squad.
But Mbappe’s arrival could solve Manchester United’s current crisis for goals. And given they are pretty well positioned for a top-four place, it could further guarantee them a place in the UEFA Champions League next season.
