Chelsea could sign up to four players in January as Todd Boehly seeks to build an exciting project.
According to Simon Phillips, Chelsea could make up to four signings to strengthen their squad in January. A new striker, winger and a right-back could come in the window, while a midfielder may also be an option.
There were doubts about Chelsea’s ability to replicate the spending power witnessed under former owner Roman Abramovich. Todd Boehly seems to have continued the trend of spending big on necessary players. The American has embarked on building a new, exciting project.
Despite spending north of £200 million in the summer on necessary players, Chelsea are yet to see the best of their arrivals. The likes of Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella are yet to settle well. Meanwhile, experienced arrivals Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Kalidou Koulibaly are not deemed good enough.
As the dust settles on the new manager’s early tenure at the club, Chelsea may look for solutions to several problems through the window. Simon Phillips insists the club could target up to four signings in January to bolster positions that have left them in a difficult position.
Considering Chelsea’s stature as a club and the requirement of a big player in the transfer window, they remain linked with many high-profile players. The report suggests the Blues are thinking about bringing in a new striker, winger and right-back. The latter could become a requirement for the summer if Reece James returns from his injury by the new year.
They remain linked with Ivan Toney, who certainly is a better option than their current strikers. Additionally, Chelsea continue to keep tabs on Rafael Leao, but the Portuguese international could sign a new deal with AC Milan in the coming weeks.
As for a right-back, Kyle Walker-Peters’s name got mentioned recently. In truth, each player will cost a lot for Chelsea to sign them. They certainly have the budget to execute those transfers, but the club may be wary of overspending in the winter window.
As we approach the January transfer window, Chelsea’s targets could narrow down. The required players could be clearer in the coming months. For now, there is plenty of speculation around the market over who Chelsea want to sign.
