Atletico Madrid eyeing permanent move for Sergio Reguilon

La Liga giants Atletico Madrid want to sign Sergio Reguilon permanently after the Tottenham defender made his long-awaited debut.

According to Fichajes, Atletico Madrid are eyeing a permanent switch for Sergio Reguilon, who is spending the season on loan from Tottenham. The left-back only made his long-awaited debut midweek, and the La Liga giants believe he could be an astute acquisition.

Sergio Reguilon’s time at Tottenham proved fruitless. He did play regularly under Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo but couldn’t cement a permanent place under Antonio Conte. The arrival of Conte spelt the end for the Spaniard, with the Italian making his plans clear to the fullback.

Conte left Reguilon behind in London as the Tottenham squad travelled to the far east for their pre-season training. The left-back joined Atletico Madrid on loan late in the window. While Diego Simeone hoped to use the player immediately, injury problems proved restrictive.

Reguilon only made his debut in midweek against Real Mallorca. However, Simeone is reportedly convinced of his qualities as the Atletico manager eyes critical changes to his backline. Moreover, the La Liga giants and their current economic condition could see them sell a few notable players and procure economically viable options.

Reguilon falls in that category of players, although Simeone trusts his quality in the left-back role. Hence, Atletico are looking to make his move permanent and could open discussions with Tottenham regarding the deal’s financial details.

The Tottenham defender has a contract until 2025, and the north London side could demand a significant sum in return. Additionally, Spurs remain interested in Yannick Carrasco. So there could be room for alternate discussions involving the two players.

Moreover, Tottenham have already agreed on a deal for Destiny Udogie from Udinese, who will join next summer. The impending arrival indicates that Spurs are ready to move on from Reguilon. How much they would demand for the left back remains the question.

Atletico could look to complete a deal in January and allow Simeone to focus his efforts on other targets. The manager could make further changes to his squad in the window.
