English star James Maddison is considering a switch to Newcastle United in 2023

According to Give Me Sport, Leicester City star James Maddison appears ready to consider a switch to Newcastle United.

The English international has been one of the best players at the King Power and is thriving under Brendan Rodgers. In 184 appearances for the Foxes across all competitions, the 25-year-old has clocked an impressive 51 goals and 36 assists.

Maddison was subject to interest from St James Park last summer, but the £50m bid fell short of expectations. Leicester held firm on their £60m asking price, and the player stayed put at the King Power Stadium.

The 25-year-old continues to impress this season and has six goals and four assists in 13 appearances in all competitions. This has seen Newcastle retain their interest ahead of the January transfer window.

Any chance of the Magpies making a move in the winter window appears remote. However, a summer move could occur given that Maddison has just over a year left on his current deal. The longer Leicester hold onto their stance without the player signing an extension, the weaker their hand in negotiations.

The English ace was picked by Gareth Southgate for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and it could prove to be an excellent opportunity for the player to take his game to a larger audience. A good outing could also force Newcastle’s hand as they seek to bring in an attacking midfielder mid-season.

The player, for his part, is open to moving to Tyneside. He believes playing under Eddie Howe to be a comfortable proposition given the years spent under Brendan Rodgers. It should, at the very least, make the transition easier.

Leicester have struggled all season and are miles away from competing for the biggest trophies in football. Meanwhile, Newcastle are a team on the rise and could challenge the established order in the coming years.

At 25, Maddison is at the right age to take the next step in his career.  Newcastle could offer him just that and ensure he becomes a key cog in their plans for the coming years. Good on the ball and a capable scorer from midfield, he will add an attacking impetus to Howe’s roster.

Adding a player with such silky skills could give Newcastle the edge in the middle of the park. Technically proficient and physically adept, the Englishman is poised on the cusp of developing into a top-flight great. Whether that will be at Newcastle remains to be seen.
