Real Madrid will reportedly have to fend off stiff competition from Atletico Madrid for 21-year-old Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Enzo Fernandez has popped up on the radar of Atletico Madrid. The 21-year-old Benfica midfielder is also a target for several other European bigwigs, including Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Manchester City.
Enzo Fernandez has come leaps and bounds in the last twelve months, with his stock skyrocketing after a scintillating 2021 campaign with River Plate. And after starting the 2022 season brightly, several high-profile clubs came calling for the Argentine midfielder in the summer before he joined Benfica.
The 21-year-old has taken no time to establish himself as a pivotal figure for Benfica, chipping in with three goals and four assists in 22 appearances. Fernandez’s performances have also likely earned him a ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. At the same time, several European bigwigs, including Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, have set their sights on him.
Real Madrid will need to plan for life after Luka Modric and Toni Kroos in the coming months. While the ageing midfield duo might carry on for another season, they are in the twilight of their respective careers. So the Merengues have to lay down a succession plan for the creative pair.
Several midfielders, including Jude Bellingham, have thus emerged on Real Madrid’s radar. And Enzo Fernandez is also a viable target for Los Blancos. But Real Madrid will have to fend off stiff competition from local rival Atletico Madrid in the race to sign the Argentine midfielder.
Atletico Madrid will head into the next two transfer windows looking to remodel the squad after a disastrous UEFA Champions League campaign. Several players have underperformed this season, and Los Rojiblancos will need a squad overhaul next year. Enzo Fernandez is thus an option worth considering for Atletico Madrid.
Apart from Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, Manchester City and Liverpool are also interested in signing the 21-year-old Argentine midfielder. It will be interesting to see how the balance of the equation changes following the entry of the Colchoneros.
