Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing 28-year-old right-back Nelson Semedo from Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers in January.
Simon Phillips has told Give Me Sport that Chelsea are looking to add more depth to the right-back department. The Blues have identified 28-year-old Wolves defender Nelson Semedo as the ideal target.
He told GIVEMESPORT, “Chelsea also like Nelson Semedo from Wolves and are considering him as an option to come in to give competition for Reece James.”
The Portuguese international has had a tough time since moving to Molineux and has started just six Premier League games this season. Semedo has fallen down the pecking order at Wolves, and the Premier League club have had a torrid campaign so far.
It will be interesting to see if Wolves are willing to cash in on the 28-year-old in the January transfer window and re-invest the money into their squad. They are currently battling relegation and could certainly use a couple of quality reinforcements midway through the season. Semedo’s sale might allow them to bring in new players.
Furthermore, the Portuguese defender could get a fresh start at Chelsea. The move seems ideal for all parties in theory. The defender was linked with Chelsea in the summer as well.
Chelsea signed Marc Cucurella from Brighton during summer transfer window to add depth to the left=back department. However they were unable to bring in a quality right-back alternative for Reece James, and that has been a problem for Graham Potter in recent weeks.
First choice right-back Reece James is sidelined with an injury and Potter has had to rely on Cesar Azpilicueta, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic as his right wing-back options. Semedo will act as a cover for the England international until he can recover fully.
Wolves paid £37 million for the 28-year-old defender when they signed him from Barcelona. And it will be interesting to see if they are willing to negotiate a reasonable fee for him in January.
Given the player’s performances in the Premier League and his lack of importance in the Wolves squad, the Blues are highly unlikely to pay a premium for his services. Chelsea will hope to sign the Portuguese international for a knockdown price.
