Sporting CP are ready to offer a grand welcome to Cristiano Ronaldo as they are eyeing a January move for the Manchester United forward.

As per a report in Daily Mirror, Sporting CP would fancy a move for Cristiano Ronaldo in the winter transfer window. The Portuguese international came through the Portuguese club’s academy before making a big leap into competitive football by joining Manchester United.

The 37-year-old has been in and out of the team as Erik ten Hag’s regime has seen him warming the bench mostly. With the incident against Tottenham Hotspur still fresh in everyone’s mind, Ronaldo tried to douse the flame with an all-round performance against Sheriff Tiraspol in the UEFA Europa League.

The Portuguese forward capped his return to the team with a goal and will definitely be in contention in the game leading up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In the meantime, former club Sporting CP are keen on re-signing Ronaldo and preparing a bid for him.

Affording Ronaldo would be a huge problem for Sporting CP as they do not have much room in their finances. Manager Ruben Amorim has recently ruled out a move to re-sign the Portuguese stalwart from Manchester United.

“Ronaldo is a top player, a Manchester United player. I’m going to respond the same way as a lot of journalists in Portugal ask me that question a lot. He is a Manchester United player.”

“Everybody in Sporting dreams of the return for Cristiano, but we don’t have the money to pay his wages. I think he is happy in Manchester but is not playing so that is the problem.”

Manchester United are doing quite well in the Premier League after their initial problems. The Red Devils remain in and around the top four leading up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, showing the progress under Erik ten Hag.

There won’t be many movements for Manchester United in January as they splashed their heart out in the summer. But if Ronaldo moves out, they might bring in a replacement to replace his goals as it stands. Several attackers, including Cody Gakpo, have emerged on their radar.

Ronaldo would be ready to reduce a significant portion of his wages to accelerate a move. And the Portuguese club will also offer him to ply his trade in the Champions League. But it will be interesting to see if their impending offer allows Ronaldo to finally leave Manchester United.
