Newcastle United are still interested in securing the services of Brazilian wonderkid Angelo Gabriel despite having had an opening bid rejected by Santos during the last summer transfer window.

According to GOAL, Newcastle United still hold a serious interest in 17-year-old Brazilian attacking prodigy Angelo Gabriel, who remains a top target for the Toon despite seeing an opening bid worth £18 million knocked back over the summer.

Since their Saudi-led takeover last year, the Magpies have been extremely smart with their recruitment, helped by the canny appointments of Eddie Howe as first-team manager, and Dan Ashworth as director of football.

You could be forgiven for thinking the mega-rich Magpies will absolutely splash the cash on high-profile statement signings, the likes of Mbappe and Neymar of this world, such was the initial narrative set by the mainstream media back then. In contrast, Newcastle’s transfer policy has been more evolutionary than revolutionary.

They are also planning for the future, and have added quality to their youth ranks with the likes of Jude Smith, Alex Murphy, Charlie McArthur, Jordan Hackett, and Amadou Diallo, while a deal has been finalised to sign Garang Kuol, the 18-year-old Australian wonderkid who will officially become a Newcastle player when the January 2023 transfer window opens.

This is done with a view to save a fortune on transfer fees in the future, as well as to acquire world-class talent at source before others and nurture it according to their own needs. The Toon hierarchy has no plans to stop there. It appears they are now targeting Brazilian talent, going by their recent links to Vasco da Gama midfielder Andrey Santos and his teammate Eguinaldo.

Another name that has been on the Magpies’ radar for a while now is that of Santos winger Angelo Gabriel. The Athletic revealed last month that Newcastle’s chief scout Steve Nickson travelled to Brazil to watch the 17-year-old Santos forward in the flesh after they had an £18 million proposal rejected for the teenage talent.

Over the years, Santos has supplied many world-class footballers, including Pele, Neymar, Rodrygo, and Kaio Jorge. Angelo is expected to follow in their footsteps and make the move across the Atlantic sooner rather than later.

Angelo has been making the headlines ever since he broke onto the scene as the 15-year-old youngest debutant in the Brazilian club’s history. Since then, he has progressed steadily and has earned vital first-team minutes under his belt for Peixe.

To date, the player has turned out 93 times for Santos. And while his tally of three goals and seven assists might not bat an eyelid, the left-footed right-winger has earned comparisons to Neymar for his quick feet, tricks, ball control, and dribbling ability. It’s no wonder he has captured the attention of several European bigwigs, including Barcelona.

However, with the Blaugrana under more financial strain following their recent Champions League group stage crash-out, Newcastle may well get a clear run at Gabriel.

Contracted until 2024, Gabriel turns 18 in December and has a €60 million buyout clause in his existing deal, but Santos are willing to part ways for almost half of that figure. It remains to be seen whether the Magpies come forward with an improved offer in the near future.
