West Ham United are interested in Valencia star Hugo Guillamon as they remain keen on reinforcing the midfield.

According to 90min, Premier League side West Ham United are keeping an eye on Valencia’s Hugo Guillamon as they seek to strengthen the midfield.

The Hammers invested well last summer but are yet to hit top stride this season. They are far from done and are seeking midfield reinforcements. Two of the names at the top of their list are the Eredivisie duo of Edson Alvarez and Ibrahim Sangare.

While both players are keen to move to the Premier League, interest from several other top clubs will make life difficult for the Hammers to land their targets. With this in mind, West Ham appear to be also readying alternative targets, one of them being Guillamon.

The 22-year-old came through the ranks at the Mestalla and is today a full international for Spain. Guillamon has made 80 appearances for Los Che, scoring thrice and assisting three more. A versatile player, he can do a job not just in defensive midfield but also as a centre-back.

A player with excellent concentration and positioning, the youngster also has a good passing range. This makes him an ideal star to be deployed at the base of the midfield, and link the attack to the defence. Guillamon is far from the finished product and could develop into a dominant player with the right guidance.

Landing him could prove to be a necessity over a luxury should Declan Rice depart the club anytime soon. The Hammers ace is attracting attention from some of Europe’s top clubs, and it is unlikely that West Ham can hold onto him for too long.

Similar to Rice, Guillamon can also perform a dual role and could be a like-for-like replacement on the Hammers’ roster. Alvarez and Sangare are better-developed players at this moment in time and will add dynamism to the Hammers midfield.

As things stand, West Ham have just four players capable of playing in central midfield. Apart from Rice, this includes Tomas Soucek, Flynn Downes and Pablo Fornals – not the most illuminating of options.

Unless they develop into a side challenging for trophies, it could prove difficult to land the big names in football. Acting fast to land Guillamon would be in their best interests. Should he develop as expected, West Ham could have a real star on their cards.
